What is the Big Ask?Put simply.. It is a vital piece of legislation being put to government asking them to cut CO2 emissions by 3% a year to bring the UK in line with its Kyoto targets. Widely known as the Climate Change Bill. Its implementation will have a significant effect on climate change It will have a far reaching and over-riding effect on all areas of our local campaigns from housing, recycling and transport to planning, trade and agriculture. At present the Climate Change Bill is an Early Day Motion, (EDM 178.) As an EDM it needs support of MP's to be brought before parliament as a bill. To get MP's to support the bill we need to send them hundreds of postcards, go and see them, invite them to public meetings to debate the bill. We need to get others to lobby their local MP's and do the same in their own areas. The bill has the backing of Stop Climate Chaos, a powerful new coalition including a wide range of organisations including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Tearfund, Womens Institute, People and Planet, RSPB, WWF and others. We need to work with these organisations towards lobbying MP's and spreading awareness of the campaign. Last month The Big Ask passed a really important milestone. The 324th MP signed EDM 178, meaning we now have a clear, verifiable, public and official record that a majority of MPs support the Climate Change Bill! Since then the numbers have just kept on rising and we are now at a grand total of 329 MPs - which is just fantastic. It was planned to put the bill forward in Summer 2007, but this has now been set for Autumn 2006. This gives us a few months to really focus on getting this bill through..
